After enjoying a nice meal at one our your favorite restaurants and are presented with the bill, do you begin to calculate the tip based on the total of the check? Most people do, but I contend that you should calculate the tip on the amount PRIOR to the sales tax added. Why would you want to leave a tip total on an amount that includes tax? Doesn't make sense to me!
