It was a
beautiful day on the Darby Creek with Don, and friends Annette and Andrew. We paddled our way through some beautiful sights, taking in the natural beauty often times forgotten. Among our finds were, turtles, a blue heron, fisher spider, nettles (ouch!), flowers, sunshine, damselflies and dragonflies. After a leisurely lunch on the waters edge, we began the second half of our trip, the last 3 miles or so. We ended up at Osprey Lake, hauled our equipment up to the shoreline, Andrew hauled the two boats and the guys were headed back to get the truck. To my
surprise I had left the car keys in the truck and therefore, we had no way of driving back to get it! The funny thing about this is that I did the EXACT same thing the last time I canoed with Annette and Andrew. So with that being said, I thought I was taking extra precautions to make sure I had the keys with me. Annette and I even discussed at length before getting out of the car! I was not going to make the same mistake twice! When I discovered that the keys were in my purse back in the truck I was mortified! How could I have done this again? Annette and Andrew, said "don't worry about it, we'll call Mac". Mac is their friend who lives very nearby and was the one who bailed us out of
this predicament the last time. He agreed to meet us and take the guys up to the truck. He did not seem amused! (Sorry Mac!) Andrew told me that this happens to them all the time, and in fact Mac gave it a name, "Canoe Calculus", the art of having too many things to remember relating to logistics and keys when preparing a trip down the Darby. So now we all know that I have failed Canoe Calculus not once but twice! I better study up for the next trip so it won't happen again! That is if I am even invited!
Andrew said Mac was amused and didn't mind at all bailing us out. Stay tuned for the third edition of Canoe Calculus.
